Ferndown
Psychotherapeutic
Counselling
Welcome to Ferndown Psychotherapeutic Counselling, a private and LGBT+ friendly practice based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.
At times life can be difficult and choosing to engage in counselling takes courage. I believe we all have our own lived experiences, and you are the only person who knows how that feels. I am committed to working together at your own pace to understand what is going on, to actively listen and ensure you feel heard. It can be good to speak in confidence to someone impartial, who can listen without judgement, accept, and value you for who you are.
My interest lies with relationships, the one’s we have with ourselves, and those we have with others; friends, family, partners (romantic or intimate), colleagues at work. The way these influence our way of thinking, interacting and the way we present ourselves to the world. These may be causing stress, anxiety, or depression.
Issues may arise from internal power struggles (conflict) when our own morals, and values don’t align with external influences or when we are faced with life-changing events. These may leave us with feelings of anger, guilt, shame, isolation and being misunderstood.
Working together in therapy can lead to better relationships, identify, and find solutions to specific problems, help reduce feelings of distress and develop new ways of communicating.
Experience in supporting patients, their families and carers when a life limiting illness has been given. One to one bereavement counselling to those who have lost a loved one and co-facilitating a bereavement support group in a hospice setting. Individual, couples & twos counselling in private practice.
What is counselling?
Counselling is a talking therapy which provides a safe, confidential space for you to talk to a trained professional about your issues and concerns. A therapeutic alliance is built up on respect and trust so thoughts, feelings and behaviours can be explored safely, and a better understanding of yourself and others developed.
How to get the most out of counselling
To get the most out of therapy, regular appointments are recommended, usually on the same day and time each week. However, these can be flexible to fit in with your availability. I offer both face to face and telephone counselling, daytime on Mondays and Saturdays, and evenings throughout the week. Sessions are 50 minutes (known as a therapeutic hour).

I work with adults and offer both short term and long term therapy for individuals, couples or twos. Flexible appointments are available, with options of day time on Mondays & Saturdays or evenings during the week.

Testimonials

Twelve months ago, I was where you are now, ready to take the next step in my mental health journey but unsure of who to turn to for help. Who could be trusted with my inner thoughts and the parts of me I hid from the world? I scoured the internet for hours, read hundreds of adverts, and googled more than a few words that I ddn't understand; growing more anxious by the second. And then I found Steph, and my worries simply melted away.
Her kindness and person-centred approach changed everything for me. No matter what we discuss, whether it be my past, my fears, or my shame, she never passes judgement and has helped me transform my life with the changes I wanted to make but never thought I would. From boundaries to self-soothing techniques, nothings off the table and while there is still work for us to do, I know that I made the right choice and there will always be a safe space withing for me for when times are tough, and i need to talk.

Couples Counselling Testimonial
Six months on from your sessions and while we're still a work in progress, things are definitely healthier and stronger than they were late last year. We keep in mind the techniques and discussion points from your sessions, which are a great help. There are times where we've got a little lost in the moment, but we're able to talk things over afterwards.. After all, no ones perfect....
